The Frankie Fund
Kindred
Souls Foundation lost a special cat in our family named Frankie. Frankie was
fostered by Randy & Kelly Marquis from the day he appeared on their doorstep 3
years ago. Soon after, Frankie was diagnosed with a portosystemic shunt (PSS)
which is an abnormal connection between the portal vein and systemic
circulation. Frankie’s prognosis was questionable, but thanks to the brilliant
medical care from Chambers Creek Veterinary Hospital and the undying love and
care provided by Randy and Kelly, Frankie went on to live a wonderful, fun
filled, happy life.
In February 2011 Frankie was diagnosed with an infection and began a series of
antibiotic treatments, none of which seemed to stop the infection. Three doctors
at Chambers Creek Vet were working with Frankie and referred him to Dr. Dan
Hicks at The Animal Emergency Clinic for a neurology assessment. Dr. Hicks
agreed with the diagnosis and a more aggressive antibiotic treatment was
started. A couple weeks later, after no improvement, Dr. Hicks suggested an
MRI,
which was done and supported the initial diagnosis by all of the doctors. The
next step was a bone biopsy. Sadly, the biopsy showed that Frankie had a very
severe form of cancer and it was spreading rapidly. Frankie’s prognosis
plummeted since no treatment could help him. He would be doomed to a life of
excruciating pain until the cancer finally consumed him. Euthanasia was the only
humane option.
In honor of Frankie, Kindred Souls Foundation has started "THE FRANKIE FUND."
This fund will benefit cats and dogs in our Kindred Souls family that become ill
and need specialized medical care beyond the normal limits. The Frankie Fund
will only be used for these types of services and will save lives! Frankie lived
a short but happy life and he brought much joy to the Marquis household. We
thank the Marquis for giving this special boy the opportunity to feel loved,
safe, and accepted into a family. Frankie was well worth the financial
commitment we made to him and are happy that we, with the help of the Marquis,
were able to make him comfortable for his three years on this earth.
