Blackie's Story (as reported by his rescuer)
Blackie’s background is very special. When the rescuer told me his sad story, I
was determined to help this loyal dog. Blackie has been following a garbage
collector since he was a puppy. He followed the man wherever he went. The man
was too poor to afford to buy dog food for Blackie. When he had leftover, he
would give it to Blackie. Most of the time Blackie never had enough. When the
man was drunk and in bad mood, he would vent his anger to Blackie. He shouted at
Blackie with dirty words and kicked the dog, cursing and throwing heavy objects
at Blackie. Still, the dog kept following him whenever the man went. In late
October, the man had a fight with another rover, who was later seriously wounded
and needed to be hospitalized. The man was arrested and had to be in jail. When
the man was being questioned at the police station, Blackie was waiting outside
for his owner. One of the policemen told me that Blackie had been staying there
since November 5. They tried to drive him away in many ways. Blackie would
escape but come back later again. Nobody knew how the dog could survive in a
severe winter. Sometimes he would stay in the cold wind for hours, looking into
the police office with eager eyes for his owner. The police unit contacted the
city pound but smart Blackie managed to slip away.
When I learned the story, I was
touched and decided to help this dog but wondered if the dog would understand my
good intention. To my amazement, Blackie was very friendly to me when I first
met him at the police station. He knew that I was trying to help him. He licked
my hands and looked at me with passionate eyes. I took him to the vet for a
medical check-up and has been boarding him there since then. Blackie is very
intelligent. He can shake hands and likes to be with people. All the assistants
at the vet’s are fond of him and give him high credits. Blackie is a wonderful
dog, who deserves a loving owner to cherish him.
