Through our
joint efforts, Animal Rescue Team Taiwan and Kindred Souls Foundation have
been able to give Taiwanese street dogs loving families in Washington State!
Since 2008, Kindred Souls Foundation has placed over 90 street dogs. Wiley is
one of the successful stories that represents our determination to heal the
wounded bodies and souls of these precious animals.
Wiley's story as reported by his rescuers in Taiwan
Wiley’s owner is a mountaineer, who makes a
living by hunting games in the forest. Life is harsh and it’s never easy. The
man didn’t treat his dog well. Most of the time, Wiley had nothing to eat except
the rotten fruit growing in the wild. Due to lack of nutrition and the bad
environment, Wiley was beginning to develop the skin problem. He was losing his
hair and his skin was infectious. Wiley couldn’t sleep or rest even a few
minutes because he was scratching his skin all the time. His teeth are ground
down from constant biting of his skin. His right eye did not fully form. It’s
impossible for the mountaineer to send Wiley to the vet’s so the situation was
getting worse until one day the rescuer found Wiley had become hairless and his
skin was bleeding.

Wiley was unlike the other Taiwanese
dogs we rescued- he was more like a feral dog. A wild adult dog living in the
mountains with very limited human contact and having to fend for himself. When
he arrived to us, he had no ability to bond with people or other dogs. He was
not aggressive in any way- more detached and autistic-like. Wiley's physical
body was healing, but he was not socially or emotionally ready for the world.
Kathy Sdao, Certified Applied Animal
Behaviorist, worked with us on his socialization and
Jackie Obando, DVM, worked further with us
on his medical needs. Wiley's skin was so oily and foul-smelling that no amount
of baths were working. Dr Obando gave us a one-time natural remedy to "wash the
un-washable" and low-and-behold it worked!
A year later, Wiley has made great progress in all areas. His canine siblings
help us teach him play and dog socialization. Wiley's feline siblings are
patient while he learns manners- like not to chase them as though they are
mountain vermin! He is a sweet and gentle soul who makes us smile on a daily
basis. He shows signs of joy and happiness through his interactions with the
world. We look at his rescue photos almost everyday to remind us of the
significant difference, to both extremes, humans can make in an animals life.
